Bipolar Disorder in Children
Generally in children and teens, bipolar disorder occurs, which is also known as manic-depression. If you suspect that a child is bipolar than it is important to recognize the bipolar symptoms and should seek for help of professionals. If it is intervened at early stages than it can significantly improve treatment outcomes.
Mood Cycles
Bipolar children tend to experience cycle between dark depressions and manic highs, often more than one time or at multiple times per day. Few seem to experience both of these states at once, by which they become frustrated and irritable.
Mania
Common symptoms during manic cycles include a less need for sleep, hyperactivity, giddiness, racing thoughts, hyper sexuality, compulsive creativity and grandiose behaviors or a sense of invincibility.
Depression
During a depression period, a bipolar child may be extremely irritable, hostile, sad or suicidal. He may show violent signs and disturbing thoughts, such as threatening to kill others.
Delusions
During this time the children experience hallucinations such as hearing voice, have delusion thoughts which do not make any sense.
Considerations
Different children have different symptoms of bipolar disorder and these symptoms may change with growing age of the child. During this time Threats of violence or suicide should be taken seriously.
